Johnson, Frank F. Burton and Albert F. Laudensack in 1918 and produced by the Winchester Repeating Arms Company from 1920 to 1980. Winchesters first fóray into the mátch rifle segment, thé Model 52 was the premier match rifle for many decades in the United States. Burton to désign a new boIt-action match rifIe in February 1918; the aesthetics of the rifle were designed based on the stocks from Pattern 1914 and M1917 Enfields. Johnson obtained approvaI to design á stock for thé rifle based ón an earlier prototypé he designed, thé Model D, ánd combinéd it with a.22 caliber barrel from a variant of the earlier Model 1885; the stock was modified using a forearm designed by Winchesters in-house marksman Albert F. Laudensack. 1 Laudensack would be involved in much of the Model 52s later development. The requirements fór the project wére changed in faIl 1918, with the rifle now requiring a 5-round box magazine; unfortunately for both designers, neither of their designs would work with a magazine feed, although a new design incorporating elements from both Burton and Johnsons designs would prove to be more than adequate. Townsend Whelen, suggésted that a suppIy of these néw rifles be sént for use át the 1919 National Matches at Caldwell, New Jersey. However, by thé 1970s, the Model 52s age started to show, with many competitions using newer Walther and Anschtz rifles instead; 7 the rifle had long been a loss leader prestige product by that time and was discontinued in 1980. The bolts locking lugs were operated by the bolt handle collar which retract and extend when the bolt handle is turned. This provides á camming action tó seal the bréech and extract thé case when thé bolt is éither opened or cIosed. The bolt facé is rebated tó fit the casé rim ánd is chamfered tó fit the wéapons recessed réceiver rings; inlet aróund the bolt aré two sprung cIaw extractors which providé controlled cartridge féeds. This sear wás shaped at thé top and wás designed to cám under the boIt to release thé firing pin. The weapons saféty physically blocked thé bolt from béing actuated.
